The gearboxes that come with dewalt drills are not perfect as a wheel transmission right out of the box. First we have to modify the set of planetary gears so we can eliminate the torque limiter section of the gearbox and also shrink the assembly by an inch or so. This will save space inside the bot plus also reduce the complexity of the system.
Here is a picture of the “sort of” complete motor. We still need to fabricate a faceplate and motor mounts for it to be bot ready.
Here is the set of planetary gears that we were able to swap out from the main 2-speed gearbox and torque limiter gearbox assembly. It was a direct fit and this allows us just to plug in a double D shaft right into the motor without any additional fabrication. We will be using the double d end as seen on the end of the shaft above and have it go to 1/2″ key stock to attach our wheel to it.
here you can see what the standard dewalt motor gear assembly looks like before it’s “swapped” around.
We worked on this section during the last half of our Wednesday Meeting and a little bit of our Thursday meeting. Due to our classes most of us were not able to spend too much time working on the bot.
